On-Air

Compared to many student radio stations Insanity is still very young. It is only coming up to it's third birthday. However it has been very busy. In the two year's the station has been running it has completed three RSL (Restricted Service Licences) each of which lasted upt o 28 days:

RSL1: 18th February 1998 - 17th March 1998.
RSL2: 9th October 1998 - 5th November 1998.
RSL3: 1st March 1999 - 27th March 1999.

You can listen to some of the staion's output in the Listen and Shows section. Or you can hear 28 days in 20 minutes here. (2.2Mb)

The Radio Authority limits the amount of time stations can be on air. They don't allow anyone to be full time on air. When a permanent frequency becomes available organisations bid to run it. Unfortunately this takes millions and millions of pounds and full time staff. To allow other stations to exist The Authority allows community groups to be on air for a maximum of 28 days twice a year.

However, due to a change in licencing, The Authority are offering Low Powered AM licences. AM isn't as good as FM but it's still not bad (i'm sure lots have you have listened to Radio 5 Live and Virgin). Without getting to techy the licence is designed to cover campus (but in reality should hit Egham and Englefield). Insanity hopes to go on-air later this year.
